Weight management often requires long-term strategies.

New research suggests that patients who discontinue popular GLP-1 drugs like Mounjaro or Wegovy tend to recover lost weight much more quickly than those who end traditional lifestyle plans.

Published data in a prominent health publication points out that while overweight people often shed substantial amounts of their body weight while using the jabs, the weight is regained at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month upon discontinuation.

"Users buying such medications should be informed of the potential of rapid weight regain when the medication is stopped," stated lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.

This pace of recovery suggests a return to original weight within about one and a half years.

Weighing Therapies

The study, which reviewed dozens of trials involving over 9,000 of participants, contrasted the outcomes of these new drugs with other pills.

Scientists emphasize that individuals who lose weight through lifestyle changes alone typically have a more gradual creep back—approximately 0.1 kg a month—once they finish.

The Reason for the Rapid Regain

Nutrition scientists propose the mode of action of the drugs accounts for the accelerated regain.

The injections mimic a body's own chemical called glucagon-like peptide-1, which helps regulate appetite.

"Sustained high doses of GLP-1 levels several times higher than the body's typical production may cause the system to produce less of its endogenous hormone, and could diminish responsiveness to its effects," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition expert.

"Withdrawal of this hormone supplement leads to hunger is no longer kept in check, making overeating much more probable."

A Chronic Issue?

Health authorities recommend the injections for individuals with weight-linked medical conditions, alongside recommended lifestyle changes.

A number of clinicians argue that, due to the significant potential of relapse, the treatment is often ongoing.

This view is echoed by drug manufacturers, who say that the results "underscore the chronic nature of obesity," akin to managing diseases like hypertension.

Patient Accounts

Individuals who have discontinued the jabs explain a intense return of appetite.

"It was like a trigger that goes on and you're instantly ravenous," said a patient.

This difficulty is compounded if individuals have not adopted sustainable dietary or behavioural changes during therapy.

Widespread Adoption

Recent estimates indicate that millions of adults in the UK have tried these injections in the last 12 months, with desire continuing to grow.

  • Use is more common among females compared to males.
  • The 40s and 50s demographic shows the highest usage rates.
  • Many obtain the medications through private prescriptions rather than public health services.

Finally, experts emphasize that while the jabs are effective tools for weight loss, they are not a permanent solution and long-term success relies on combined behavioural support.
