Tutoring a Toddler to Grow into an 'British Gentleman' – Is It Worth the Money?

Child education concept
The organization responsible for the advertisement states that what appears like "extravagance or oddity" is actually "intentional investment in early-stage learning".

"A family based in north London wants to find an exceptional and qualified tutor to support their most junior child on his first steps to growing into an British gentleman."

When reading this listing, you might naturally skip the wording "initial stages" as mere figurative language.

But, it could be the most important element of this distinctive employment listing, as it attempts to hire a tutor for a infant.

Many of submissions have now been submitted since the unidentified family published their call for the £180,000 per year tutor, who has to be "an exceptional individual".

Over the last few weeks, the post has gained attention in the news, with many asking why?

Innovative Idea

The CEO, chief executive of Tutors International, which is assisting the family in their search, stated that in spite of early scepticism, he found the plan "far sighted", and "advanced".

When he met the family, he mentioned they recognized the atypical character of their demand, and how early in age their son is.

But, they explained that they "were unwilling to delay any longer" to hire a tutor, as they had postponed until their older child was five, and by that age "cultural influence had already become established".

But what does the family mean by "cultural leaning"?

It's "comprehensive", the expert answered. "How you eat, the manner you speak".

He stated the older sibling had picked up "extremely delicate, non-verbal cues" from the family, and had taken on their cultural habits. The family explained to him they hoped to prevent the same situation to repeat itself with their infant.

The intention: To bring in a British tutor, who should speak with standard English accent, to shape the baby from the very start.

Tutoring discussion
Tutors International state the listing has started a broader conversation about how parents regard schooling, elitism and the role of home and culture in education.

Natural Absorption

"A lot of the development at the start here is rather absorbed naturally," stated Adam.

It's by means of this subtle influence that the family are hoping the child will pick up the UK customs they want to cultivate.

Adam said the tutor must be someone who attended "prestigious academies – similar types of schools as the family aspire to send their son to".

"The instructor simply needs to be the right kind of person, they'll be doing things they don't even know they're doing, just naturally," he said.

Cost Not Relevant

The family explained to him the selected educator should ideally also have knowledge of or passion in riding, winter sports, artistic pursuits and musical activities so as to influence the child in a broad spectrum of interests.

Furthermore though, he stated the family hoped the tutor to sign up the child on a variety of lessons so the child would be "horseback riding and picking up an instrument by the time they are approximately three years old".

In the family's perspective, assisting their son become a "English gentleman" will lead to accomplishment and open doors.

"Considering the pros and cons of that, because it's certainly a class statement," he adds.

But, notwithstanding all this tutelage in "English culture", could the child adopt what is termed cultural bias from the multicultural family he resides with anyway?

"Yes", said he. "They realize this could fail, but they've merely embraced the view of, 'we should try and we should start as quickly as we can', because the price of it is not relevant," he explained.

Idealistic and Unrealistic

There are some in the private teaching field who express these reservations.

Another CEO, CEO and founder of an educational organization, who supplies private tutors, commented that "the journey of becoming bicultural, or actually, discovering oneself, is something that must be experienced personally, not engineered."

He noted that he had relocated from Asia to the United Kingdom at the time of 7 years old, and had been raised experiencing and practicing dual heritages. He continued to be educated at the University of Cambridge.

Peter Cui was the first individual born in mainland China to be elected to the post of Financial Officer of the Cambridge Union Society.

"The notion that an individual can function as a embodiment of English culture, someone who can in some way transplant the attributes of a English gentleman upon a one-year-old child, strikes me as optimistic and unrealistic," he stated.

"In my experience, employing a distinctly UK tutor from infancy will will not instantly create the goal they hope for.

"I never had such a figure, and nevertheless I have been privileged enough to enjoy numerous of the experiences they hope for their son."

He stated: "The reality is, self-identity cannot be dictated from the outside influences; it must be chosen, and it must come from within."

Acquiring Englishness

Of course, Britishness is something Adam thinks can be instructed – and commercialized.

"I believe the situation that the global community views us in this respect is something that we should be cherishing|valuing|appreciating
